Fashion/Beauty: Mommy Chic Uniform
Do you wear the same uniform each day? I find myself in this sad predicament. I yank the same type of clothes from my hangers—okay, if we’re being completely honest here, I even pick up the same ones piled on the floor from the day before—only to toss them on each morning afternoon and have the same but different colored reflection of myself stare back at me from the mirror. Blah. Boring. Drab. I have a self-diagnosed case of the fashion blues (don’t I always have this problem?). So, to get over the my uninspired wardrobe du jour I indulged in a little retail therapy to transform my mom basics into something a little more pulled together.
Because I continue to live on a budget and I don’t want to invest in anything too precious that can’t withstand my son’s “styling,” I took full advantage of the great end-of-season sales to cure my blues and score a few upgrades that thankfully will last beyond the summer months due to the beauty of Southern California’s year-round Mediterranean weather. If you’re in the same rut as me and want a mommy chic makeover, invest in these staples that will carry you from library story hour to Trader Joe’s to a lunch meeting to (hopefully regular) dinner dates.
The key to the "after" look is that the pieces offer more structure (especially the blazer), detail, and versatility. The (1) orangey-red blazer is surprisingly fitted, nipping in at the waist but allowing enough room for the girls (blazers are truly a big-boobed girl's best friend). The (2) striped tank top is an airy riff on the oh-so-popular french bateau shirts, falls gently over the hips without looking sloppy, and has the edgier detail of a zipper up the back. I paired the tops with jeans already in my closet that look like the (3) pair pictured here, but if you're looking for ones that are more budget friendly try here or here. Depending on the day's activities, I would wear this outfit with the (4) metallic pewter TOMS (not to be confused with the Skechers Bobs...can we say ripoff?) or the very comfortable, very wearable (5) DV by Dolce Vita desert platforms.
If your daily look only needs a small injection of style to look fresh, my advice is to invest in one (or more) blazers. Forget diamonds, blazers are a girl's best friend. These staple jackets will always make any outfit look polished. They can be worn with jeans, shorts, slacks, flowy dresses, you name it. And they NEVER go out of style. So, I'll leave you with a selection of lusts (I wish I had a money tree, so I could buy all the Elizabeth and James jackets that are calling my name), musts, and fun options that are sure to round out your closet collection.
