{Featured Friday Review & Giveaway} Natural Mat

Refreshed from a nap on his Natural Mat!

I have made my love of baby products abundantly clear. Despite my laziness in using them and my disappointment with so many, I stay dedicated because the products that ARE great - so great you recommend them over and over again - keep me coming back for more.

Natural Mat is one of those products.

Both Sarah and I have made our dedication to chemical-free homes clear. However, let's be honest. Chemical-FREE is aspirational. Due to logistical issues - from the time and energy it takes to track organic products down to the cost - we all have to make decisions about which areas we want to prioritize.

For me, where my children sleep was an obvious choice. Kids spend between 12-16 hours a day asleep. That means they spend half of their young lives with their tiny little faces mere millimeters from their mattress.

From my time in environmental policy, I also knew about the toxic chemicals often used in constructing mattresses and I didn't want them anywhere near my child. When I started researching organic crib mattresses back in 2009 there weren't a ton of options. I didn't want  an organic option from a regular company. I wanted an entire company dedicated to producing the safest products possible.

Enter Natural Mat

Made by hand in Devon, all Natural Mat mattresses are 100% organic with not a single chemical or synthetic material used. At all. Period. The mattresses are also hypoallergenic and naturally fire-retardent. When you remove these beautiful mats from the box, you believe every single word. There is no awful plastic smell emanating from the very core. There is no need to air out your child's room afterwards. There is just a soft mattress filled with materials you can pronounce (and even recognize!) - like coir and lambswool.

As I've said before, my kids are awesome sleepers. I can't prove that the reason they sleep so soundly is the mattress they sleep on. However, if someone DID prove that, I would not at all be surprised.

Let me be honest. These mattresses aren't cheap. Trust me, I've purchased two. It is the most expensive product is both of my boy's rooms. However, I have never regretted a single penny. I'm not just purchasing peace of mind either (although that is nice). This is not about me spending a lot of money so I feel better about a product I'm using. This is about buying a quality product that offered the safest sleep environment available for my child.

Now, lest you think these natural materials don't hold up as well without all that toxic plastic. Griffin has now slept on his mattress for over three years and I cannot see a single sign of wear. I think you could switch his and Amos's Naturalmat and I couldn't even tell the difference.

Basically, this is not just a product I was sent to review and fell in love with. This is a product I have used for over three years. This is a product I believe in.

Its so refreshing to see that there are accessible organic and safe options for sleeping. You got me thinking, and I would love to switch our mattress out for something more natural.

We've been trying to get around to buying a new mattress for awhile. If nothing else, this will motivate us!

At the top of the list, FOOD. This summer especially, my family has tried to eat as much organic produce as possible and it has changed everything. While I don't have any experience with Baby Products (yet...a few more weeks!), we do have some BabyEarth items just waiting for the big arrival. I also use as many organic skincare products as possible--the Naturopathica product line is my favorite.

I would love for ALL of us to have organic mattresses and pillows! Unfortunately, from a price point, it's not doable for us AND we are working crazy hard to bring home a little guy from Ethiopia -- so, that brings a lot into perspective for us. But, I am BIG on which products I put on my and my kiddos bodies... we have also been blessed with the ability to take part in an organic CSA and beef-share this year! We are trying, like you, to bring in healthier choices where we can! Thanks for the giveaway!

Other than food, we try to buy organic clothing (especially jammies) and when we can't we at least try to buy recycled clothing so it doesn't have to off-gas (though don't get me started on fabric softener).

I try to make sure that things going on my baby's skin are all natural. Body Wash, laundry detergent, bug spray, sun screen, etc. Honest Company is my go to for those items!
